Undergraduate accommodation
All first year undergraduates will be assigned rooms in Exeter College on the historic Turl Street site. Freshers are asked about room preferences and assigned a room before they arrive.
Undergraduates are guaranteed three years of college accommodation.
We guarantee accommodation in years 1, 2 and 3 to undergraduate students reading: Classical Archaeology & Ancient History, English, Fine Art, Law, History, Music, PPE, Economics & Management, Biomedical Sciences, Pre-Clinical Medicine, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Maths, Physics.
We guarantee accommodation in years 1, 2 and 4 to undergraduate students reading: Classics, Law with Law Studies in Europe, Modern Languages, Engineering, Earth Sciences. Accommodation may also be available in year 3, subject to availability (see the room ballot system, below).
Undergraduates who are not in their first year may be offered College accommodation either on the Turl Street site, in Exeter College’s award-winning Cohen Quad in fashionable Jericho, or in Exeter House in lively East Oxford. There are also four College houses available to groups of students who apply for them as a friendship group.
The room ballot system
College accommodation is allocated using a ballot system. The housing ballot takes place towards the end of Michaelmas Term. Those who wish to be included in the ballot will be arranged as follows, with Tier 1 having first choice of rooms:
Tier 1: rising third-year Classical Archaeology & Ancient History, English, Fine Art, Law, History, Music, PPE, Economics & Management, Biomedical Sciences, Pre-Clinical Medicine, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Maths, Physics; rising fourth-year Classics, Law with Law Studies in Europe, Modern Languages, Engineering, Earth Sciences.
Tier 2: all rising second-years
Tier 3: rising third-year Classics, Engineering, Earth Sciences; rising fourth-year Biochemistry, Chemistry, Maths, Physics
Tiers 1 and 2 are guaranteed a room in College. Tier 3 may be offered any rooms which are still available. Tier 1 is placed above Tier 2, and Tier 2 above Tier 3. Positions within in each tier are randomised.
Living out of College
Some undergraduates may choose to live in private accommodation rather than College accommodation (“live out”) after their first year. Letting agents typically release the housing list in December. Demand for the best properties can be very high.
All of the College’s central facilities remain available to students who choose to live out, though facilities charges (incorporated into the rental cost for those who live in Exeter College rooms) may be chargeable to those who live out.
Vacation residence forms
Undergraduates who need to be in Oxford for longer than the standard rent period for their room can apply for vacation residence. Application forms are circulated by email on Wednesday of Week 3 and must be completed and returned no later than Wednesday of Week 6.
Undergraduates who are granted vacation residence may have to move rooms for the period of their vacation residence. This is because during the vacations some rooms, particularly those on the Turl Street site and at Cohen Quad, are used to host undergraduate admissions candidates attending interviews or are let to conference guests to raise money that subsidises term-time student rents. Where it is not possible to offer vacation residence at Turl Street or Cohen Quad alternative College accommodation will normally be offered in East Oxford on the Iffley Road. Vacation residence outside the standard rent period is charged per day at the daily rate.
Undergraduates are eligible for Vacation Study Grants, covering the cost of up to 28 nights of accommodation during vacation periods. See Grants for Undergraduate Students for more information. Students can apply for a Vacation Study Grant at the same time as submitting the vacation residence application.
